Home Automation Questions and Answers

Below we have compiled a list of questions and answers that we are most frequently asked by our customers.

WHAT IS HOME AUTOMATION?

Home automation can be defined as the use of technology, both hardware and software to automate the common functions of a home. Home automation is not new and in fact has been around since the 1970's. If your home has a programmable thermostat you have already been exposed to a small example of home automation.

Home automation usually includes a combination of lighting control, home automation scenes, HVAC control, motorized shading, audio visual, remote monitoring/control and security. Home automation today uses a combination of devices that communicate with each other through either a wired (existing home electrical wiring) or wireless network. The best systems will use a combination of both wired and wireless networks commonly referred to as a "mesh" network.

IS HOME AUTOMATION COMPLICATED TO USE?

No, home automation should never be complicated to use. Its purpose is to make living your life easier, if it doesn't do this then it has not been done right!

CAN I SEE A DEMO OF WHAT HOME AUTOMATION CAN DO?

Yes, we will gladly give you a walkthrough of our own home to truly show you how far you can take home automation.

WHAT MAKES A HOME A SMART HOME?

There is a difference between a home that contains some form of home automation and a Smart Home. Most home automation solutions will have the basics covered such as scenes, remote access, automatic lighting, motion detection etc. A Smart Home is a home that uses the same common home automation functionality but takes it to the next level and adds intelligence. A Smart Home has logic controls and can influence how the home automation functionality runs. For example a Smart Home will take into account day light savings time when it senses you arriving home and only turn on the lights if it's dark out. A Smart Home will detect a water leak in the basement and send you a text message notifying you of the problem. Ottawa's HomePlus Automation specializes in building Smart Home solutions that work!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

At one time home automation was only for the ultra rich. This is no longer true. As more home automation hardware companies have entered the market, prices have come down in the last few years. The cost will depend on the complexity and size of your home automation needs. We usually recommend that our customers start small with automating 2 or 3 rooms and expand as they feel comfortable. We only use hardware from companies that have been around for at least 10 years, offer expandability and use common, established standards. All of our custom designed solutions are priced up front with no hidden costs. There are never any monthly fees with HomePlus Automation.

WHAT'S THE PROCESS?

We always start with an initial informal meeting with you to discuss your home automation requirements, get a feel for your life style and to determine what you hope to get out of your home automation system.
At this meeting we will demonstrate the products we have to offer and will show you examples of solutions we have done in the past.
From there we will document your requirements and discuss with you solutions we can provide. If you decide to go ahead, we will provide a detailed design document outlining exactly what will be done, how it will be done (itemized hardware list) when it will be done and how much it will cost.

After installation we show you how to use and maintain your system. If you ever have an issue we are a simple phone call or email away. We can also provide an annual maintenance service contract that ensures a hassle free enjoyment of your home automation system.

IS THERE A BEST TIME TO AUTOMATE A HOME?

All the home automation components that we sell and install can be added to any home (single family dwelling, condo, cottage etc.) regardless of the age of the home. Some components, such as wall switches and outlets replace your existing switches and outlets. Other components are completely wireless and battery operated.

Building a new home or planning a renovation is the perfect time to consider incorporating smart home technology into your project. We will work with you and your builder to design an automation solution that meets your needs and fits seamlessly into your renovation project.
